I photographed an LS460 for a review today. I had to laugh when I opened the hood and saw a half-acre of plastic. Lexus is definitely the worst offender here IMHO...

WHAT THE FUCK
DID THEY STUFF A V8 BLENDER IN THERE?!?
DAMMIT AUTOMAKERS, STOP THIS SHIT!

Why does lexus think I want to look at that?

You'd be surprised how much that particular engine cover and many throughout high end brands help in sound dampening. Especially with V8's, at a cold start without the covers, you'd would swear its a diesel (BMW550i best example)

Whats the point of a hood? its not like the owner will ever do anything under there anyway. Just make it a bolt on panel for the tech to remove.

Why even bother with the dipstick at this point, fuck it, why even bother with a hood?

That looks awful. While I'm not one who usually finds engines "beautiful", unless they are especially well done, I hate to see something like this. The Porsche 991's are just as bad, IMO.

To be fair, there's nothing much to see without that plastic. And not much room to see it in either.

They don't. They don't expect you to ever look at it.

How many LS owners are going to open the hood and do their own maintenance? Not many. While the cover could've looked a lot better, it's there for a reason and it's for sound deadening. It's a luxury car designed for comfort, who cares if you can see the engine porn or not.
And every gen LS has had a V8, standard.

To think they used to be good at it :(
EDIT: I see this one says toyota, but its also the same engine bay as the Lexus SC400

Too bad the LS V8 isn't a LS V8.

How about they lose the sound dampening and throw a nice mild cam on there? If I'm putting gas in my V8 engine I want to hear my fucking V8 engine.

lol right :] But when fancy peeps buy a large executive V8 sedan they want it quiet. I blame those loud ass fuel regulators (which run off a cam lobe) They are just too noisy tick tick tick tick

I like the cut of your jib.

Of course that exists. I think GM designed the LS engines for anybody not happy with what they have. I've seen the in front, mid and rear engine cars with them. They have replaced 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 cylinder engines.

And that's a GT3 engine too. Good lord.

I disagree with this one. The plastic serves a purpose by channeling air, and if it wasn't there. There isn't much to see anyways.

Compact, simple design
Excellent power to weight
One of the largest and cheapest aftermarkets
They screw up a lot, but GM still knows how to do a V8.

Eventually the hood will be screwed/bolted down, and only Lexus techs will ever see underneath. (or curious owners with ratchets)

I know it's mostly functional, but they could have designed it differently to make things more accessible. Porsche deliberately designs their cars so a dealer has to work on them.

I'm surprised more manufacturers don't just do a flap for topping up fluids like the Audi A2 used to have

Several of my review cars have had huge engine covers, Mercedes comes to mind here, but Lexus doesn't want anybody peeking behind to see the engine so theirs is the biggest.

Wouldn't surprise me to see that someday.
